Hoi AnVN · Quảng Nam
Old town, beach, motorbike to My Son, day trip to Hue
Notes
Tailor a coat, eat at the riverside lantern markets, then take the train north for the imperial tombs. Avoid Tet, everything closes.
Window
When to go
February, March, April
Dry, warm but not yet humid, sea calm enough to swim. Crowds are heavier than monsoon season but the weather is the reliable variable. May onward gets sticky; September–November is wet enough that the old town floods in places.
Tradeoffs: Lunar New Year (Tet) usually lands late January or early February. The old town is beautiful then, but tailors, restaurants, and museums close for a week. Check the dates before booking.
Duration
How long
9 days ideal, 6 minimum
Five days does Hoi An and a tailor turnaround comfortably. Nine adds two days in Hue and a buffer for the slow morning that the whole trip is sort of about.

Add Phong Nha for the caves
Four extra hours north of Hue gets you to Phong Nha, with some of the largest cave systems in the world. Adds 3 nights but rewards anyone who'd rather hike than shop.
Skip Hue if time is short
Hoi An on its own is a complete trip. Six nights there, a day trip to My Son, and a beach day works without any of the train logistics.
Fits your style
How it lines up
This is a slow trip with a checklist hidden inside it. If you don't want to commission anything from a tailor, half the day-to-day rhythm of Hoi An doesn't apply. The pay-off is cooking class smells, lantern light, and a coat that fits.
Practical
Before you go
- Visa
- Most Western passports get 45 days visa-free since 2023. Confirm on the embassy site closer to travel, Vietnam adjusts the policy quietly.
- Vaccines
- Standard travel kit. Hepatitis A and typhoid recommended; no malaria risk in Hoi An.
- Safety
- Very safe. Watch traffic crossing roads in Da Nang. Motorbike rentals are easy but most travel insurance excludes them without a Vietnamese licence.
- Money
- Cash + card both work. ATMs are everywhere. Tip in cash for cooking classes and tailor fittings; not expected elsewhere.

The old town is best walked at dawn or after dusk; midday is a bus-tour scrum.
Bebe Tailor has air-conditioned fitting rooms for the premium spend, Mr Xe is the mid-range pick, and Mrs An at the cloth market handles tight budgets; allow four or five days for a suit.
Arrive at My Son for the 06:00 opening to beat the tour buses that run from 10:00 to 16:00.
The Imperial Citadel and the Nguyen royal tombs are both worth your time; rent a scooter and use the 530,000 VND combo ticket to loop Tu Duc, Khai Dinh and Minh Mang in a day.
