Window

When to go

November, December, February, March, April

Southern hemisphere summer and shoulder. The southeaster wind dies down through autumn (March–May); spring (October–November) is wildflower-friendly. Winter (June–August) is wet and cold by Cape standards.

Tradeoffs: December–early January is high season for South African domestic tourism; the peninsula gets crowded and prices spike. February is the sweet spot.

Duration

How long

8 days ideal, 6 minimum

Six days does the city, peninsula, and one winelands night. Eight gives you a full second night in the winelands and a weather-buffer for Robben Island.

Fits your style

How it lines up

Cape Town is a city trip with a wilderness trip stapled on. The food scene is the best on the continent and the views are unfair. If you want neon urban energy, this isn't it, the city closes early. If you want long lunches and dramatic geography, it's the place.

Practical

Before you go

Visa
Visa-free for most Western passports for 90 days.
Vaccines
Standard. No malaria in the Cape; if extending to Kruger, take prophylactics.
Safety
Pickpocketing in tourist areas; muggings rare but possible after dark. Don't walk between neighbourhoods at night, Ubers are cheap. The peninsula and winelands are very safe.
Money
Card everywhere. Withdraw rand for tips and informal markets. Tip 10–15% in restaurants.

  1. Start the peninsula loop early so Cape Point's gates and queues don't eat the afternoon, and save Chapman's Peak (R50 to 60 toll) as the scenic finale.

  2. Robben Island is weather-dependent and books out; book ahead online and note any date or tour changes need to be requested at least 48 hours before sailing.

  3. The Franschhoek Wine Tram is overcrowded on weekends; plan 4 estate stops on a weekday for a calmer day.
